Saint Mark United Methodist Church - Atlanta, Georgia
Window Restoration and Protection

a) Before installation of laminated protective glazing and frames.
|
Lynchburg Stained Glass was commissioned by Saint Mark United Methodist Church to restore and protect their elegant, antique Munich Germany style windows.

b) After installation of laminated protective glazing and framing.
|
In recent history the church windows were covered with clear acrylic for protection. The acrylic and its supplemental frame system were installed in a rectangular grid pattern over the ornate antique window frames. The acrylic "yellowed" with age nearly obscuring these beautiful antique windows from exterior view. Discolored acrylic also dulls the brilliance of colored light filtering through the stained glass into the sanctuary.

c) Restored windows.
|
Restoration of the existing windows required the removal of several large leaded window panels. These panels were transported to the Lynchburg Stained Glass studio where they were re-leaded and waterproofed. In several cases, the ornate wooden window frames required repair or replacement.
Lynchburg Stained Glass installed new aluminum frames to accommodate new protective glazing. These new frames are fabricated to closely match the profile of the existing wooden frames and are custom colored to match the surrounding wood trim. The new frames are vented to the exterior to reduce heat build-up and condensation between the stained glass window and the new protective glazing. Laminated glazing now protects the church's valuable antique windows and will not discolor. The result is a near invisible protective covering which compliments the original window design.
